ACV Part Three

Project 1: Assassin’s Creed V: Rising Sun
Part 3 – Mood Sketching

To warm up this morning I decided to tackle a quick mood-painting. I previously decided on Kyoto as the main setting so I started to shop around for some references of how Kyoto looks in the old side of town (Much has remained for hundreds of years there) and also some other small towns that are scattered here all of Japan. I also wanted to look into what I could use for mechanics within the game, most notable being the view points, they act as high points for the player to climb and assess their surroundings. The most common landmarks that repeat here are actually temples so I the temple towers seemed to fit nicely.

I really liked the idea of a cluttered maze of buildings that almost all have the tiled rooftops. It would make an interesting setting for an assassin’s creed for me! 🙂

The actually mood painting started from a photo from one of my references, I like to start with photo’s to simply save time, a lot of the original photo’s rarely survive to the end but they give me a good basis which is quick. These mood paintings only take an hour with a photo-real finish to them so they work well for this IP, looking at concept art produced for the franchise in the past, much of the concept work done is produced in the same way so I figured it would follow the trend. Process of the painting is below, screenshots came every 30 minutes.

A lot was changes to the original photo as you can see, the city was extended and the depth to the ground level was increased, the lighting is far from perfect but it does the job for now. The current piece isn’t finished yet as I’ll get back to it once the main character is filly designed so I can implement him in so it all fits. If people on my Facebook Art page enjoy the painting, i may take to it a finish later on, but for now it is just a mood painting.

Back to characters! 😀

ACV Part two

Project 1: Assassin’s Creed V: Rising Sun
Part 2 – Main Character

The most iconic part of new AC games is no different from any other game and that is the main character. I wanted to tackle the design of the main character as he’ll be included as a scale reference in a fair few of the environments i’ll be creating so I want to keep things consistent. The first thing I did was put together a mood board of typical warriors of Japan, this included samurai and ninja of course, some of them are real and others are fake. While research into history is important I realise that a good design/what looks cool prompts most things, if it looks believable then its good enough. After all, this was the series that had a gun invented by Da Vinci in Renaissance-Italy, so we have room to play 🙂

With this I just wanted to focus on big forms instead of details and wanted to set out to make some solid silhouettes to upload to my facebook art page to see what my followers thought, from there I could use this mood board to create some simple detailing ready to push onto the next stage. (Thumbnails 30 minutes)

After a few hours, some favorites had emerged. 1, 3, 5 and 7. With that I pushed on to test out some detailing on the first 2. I did however have to keep some design elements that were already set in stone from the previous games; the creed’s emblem on the belt and the hood mainly but other than that I had a large amount of freedom. (Below: Character Sheet 1, 3 Hours)

Part 1 – Logos and Ideas

This week I’ve decided to attack some portfolio work and produce some artwork that would fit into a pre-existing franchise. With that in mind I have to take advantage of the fact that I live in Japan and that Ubisoft’s next Assassin’s Creed is likely set here, its a perfect fit as the setting takes advantage of the next gen hardware while staying with the setting for the plot to progress.

To warm up I put on the soundtrack to the movie The Last Samurai (, then made a couple of logo’s which follow the iconography of the game. Assassin’s Creed V: Rising Sun.

The Japan text reads “The Eagle of Honor”. The main character of all the assassin’s games have been based on the bird of prey so I shouldn’t deviate here either. The reason I also went with a sun-spot instead of the flag with traditional sun rays is that it’s actually deemed a bit of a taboo here in Japan as it reminds people of world war 2 and imperial Japan. I often see foreigners here with sun-ray tee-shirts on here and it can be a little cringe worthy at times. A lot of respect has to be given throughout the game design to avoid these type of occurrences. I also added a small snow peak to the bottom form to make it look like Fuji-San/ Mt. Fuji.

Throughout this project I’ll be creating character designs for the main character, weapon designs, props and of course, environments. I will push with this project for up to 2 weeks then move on to another but all in all, i’m very excited for the project.

Next i’ll be researching through mood boards, locations, history and much more to create some designs. I’m thinking that the game will be set in Kyoto though, it has a vast depth and history to the location with old Geisha districts, castles, temples, crowded streets with all types of culture and much more. It is the old capitol of Japan before it was changed to Tokyo, the actual name “KYOTO” means “West Capital”.
